TheSenior System Planning & Investment Engineer job itself, which sits within the Transmission System Planning and Investment group which is a critical function within the transmission business.  It has the specialist technical capability and experience to undertake the system studies and designs required to plan the current and future Transmission network, and ensures that safety, security of supply and performance of the network is maintained in accordance with required planning standards, Grid Code, SQSS and other licence obligations.

They have recently completed a number of high-profile projects that saw significant reinforcement of our transmission network in the north of Scotland. These include the completion of the first 400kV line in our area and the first GB embedded VSC HVDC link, wholly within the network. There is growth in the onshore and offshore connection of low carbon and renewable generation on our network. This is presenting exciting challenges in how to integrate these new connections onto the network while ensuring that the technical performance of the system is maintained. The role of the Senior System Planning and Investment Engineer is an exciting opportunity for you to contribute to the strategic vision to facilitate the GB transition to a low carbon future.

More specifically, you’ll have technical/functional Lead responsibility but this role will not have any line management responsibilities.

  • Carry out, review and direct, where appropriate, system studies, technical assessments, planning and development of the Transmission network.
  • Lead, coordinate and govern specific technical or functional area across teams in Transmission System and Investment Planning, e.g. System Analysis and Design.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory and licence requirements in the most economic, efficient and co-ordinated manner.
  • Assess network performance, and network capability, and identify options to maintain or enhance these.
  • Make engineering recommendations for network improvements to meet the current and future requirements of transmission. 
  • Coach and mentor junior staff members by providing training and regular review of work and deliverables.

You will have                  

As Senior System Planning & Investment Engineer you’ll have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant institution. You’ll have demonstrable experience in Network Planning, ideally in the GB Electricity Transmission sector, with knowledge of relevant industry and technical standards, and how these evolve.  You should have good knowledge of the industry structure, including interfaces with the Regulator, System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators.  You’ll also have an understanding of the commercial mechanisms for investments, including statutory processes, and the Licence Obligations under which transmission operates.

As a senior power system expert, you will possess experience in any of these areas: harmonics, stability and EMT simulations related to new equipment designs such as cables, overhead-lines, shunt reactive compensation, FACTS devices and grid connection studies.  We are currently transitioning to DIgSILENT PowerFactory as our primary analysis tool and would be keen to hear from those with experience with managing large scale system models in this package.

You should possess good communication skills and feel comfortable communicating at all levels with the ability to present on a range of technical subjects with the ability to form structured arguments with reasoned justification to influence and guide others. You should possess the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and specifications, and provide focussed information for senior management.  This role requires that you are organised and methodical with the ability to prioritise your workload against demanding targets and deadlines.
