Leading in Ecology & Conservation in York for a pioneering estate looking to be at the forefront of habitat restoration and biodiversity net gain.

This country estate has a strong reputation for its conservation focus including its management in conjunction with Natural England, its participation in multiple Agri-Environment Schemes, its links to The Woodmeadow Trust and its involvement in the ongoing BNG Pilot amongst many other activities.  This organisation is aspiring to become a leader in conservation and farming enterprises.

The Conservation Manager/Ecology Manager job itself where you will act as Conservation Lead as they undertake a reshaping of their land-use policy.  This is an opportunity to join a progressive landowner, spend time in the field, and help chart, develop and implement bold new projects potentially including large scale wetland creation, woodland planting, unimproved grassland enhancement and creation, parkland restoration and regenerative farming practices. More specifically:

 

  • Managing several existing and implementing new Agri-Environment Schemes
  • Liaising with Natural England and others on the management of Skipwith Common NNR
  • Oversight of shepherd, a flock of Hebridean sheep and small herd of Longhorn cattle
  • Establishing and facilitating a local farmers cluster
  • Establishing estate baselines for ecology and carbon in particular
  • Developing, and later implementing, the future land use and farming policy

As their conservation work grows in time, it is likely that this role may be supported by further staff members and will take on more management responsibility, with opportunities for further growth.

You will have

To be successful as Conservation Manager/Ecology Manager, you will have a healthy mi of the following:

  • An Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Conservation, Wildlife Management, Ecology, Zoology or similar
  • Five or more years’ experience in a conservation-focused role
  • Two or more years’ experience of managing and applying for Agri-Environment Schemes
  • Strong people and communication skills
  • An ability to get on with a variety of key stakeholders, from traditional farmers to conservationists to statutory authorities
  • Excellent teamwork skills and capable of taking leadership among groups
  • Good time management skills and an ability to quickly switch between different tasks
  • Good IT skills, including GIS proficiency or the willingness to learn
  • Ability to self-motivate, structure your own agenda and work diligently
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Knowledge of new funding streams: BNG, carbon sequestration, ELMS and private sector opportunities, etc
  • Knowledge of both traditional and low-intervention conservation, and an enthusiasm for the concepts regenerative/conservation agriculture
  • An understand of conservation grazing
  • Broad understanding of woodland management and creation
